A Compilation of Field Recordings from Zimbabwe

2009

CD (684-C) $15.00 plus shipping available

This compilation of field recordings from Zimbabwe portrays the diversity of the country’s rich musical heritage, featuring many lesser-known musical genres and instruments including jukwa, mbakumba, chipendani, and dongonda mbira. The album features performances by renowned musicians such as Tute Chigamba and Paradzai Gore, as well as performances by students in Tariro’s traditional music and dance ensemble.

All recordings were made in the field by Jennifer Kyker during her year in Zimbabwe as a Fulbright Fellow in ethnomusicology, in collaboration with the musicians who have generously donated their talents for this album, in support of Tariro’s work.

Tariro is a non-profit organization based in Harare, Zimbabwe. Their mission is to provide financial support for young women who have been orphaned by AIDS, enabling them to complete a secondary school education. Tariro’s work with orphaned girls emphasizes the importance of women’s education as an effective response to the AIDS epidemic.

For more information about Tariro, or to donate online, please visit their website at tariro.org.

2001

CD (348-C) $20.00 plus shipping available

Recorded in the blistering heat of Mozambique by Joel Laviolette, this CD features two musics not commonly heard abroad. The first six tracks are songs performed by Simoes John Pemba on the 22-key ChiSanza mbira, an instrument somewhat reminiscent of the Zimbabwean karimba with a repertoire that is likely cousin to that of the Zimbabwean mbira dzavadzimu.

The last four tracks are nyanga panpipe ensemble music similar to the ngororombe music of Zimbabwe’s Tonga people: a group of men dance in a circle, each piping or singing a note as his turn comes in the interweaving melody.

Batonga Across the Waters

Batonga Across the Waters

The music of the Batonga of Zambia and Zimbabwe

1999

CD (280-C) $16.00 plus shipping available

For centuries the Gwembe Valley Tonga lived along the north and south banks of the Zambezi river. In 1958 they were forced to move by the rising waters of Lake Kariba due to the damming of the Zambezi – a hydro-electric project of the then Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland. The resettlement was followed by a physical separation by the new lake, later reinforced by the incorporation of these Batonga into two different nations, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Forty years on, these recordings by Michael Baird in 1996 from both sides of the lake, show the rich musical culture of these forgotten people to be very much alive.

Tracks:
  • 1. The lake, part 1
  • 2. Lyamwaika izina lyangu
  • 3. Kwabuka ciimbo cangu
  • 4. Bamugelo ba mu Zambia

Compiled by Banning Eyre, who wrote the accompanying book In Griot Time: An American Guitarist in Mali. The CD blends Eyre’s own recordings from Bamako with exceptional studio work by Mali’s top artists. This is Mali as you’ve never heard it, a musical portrait of Bamako with its grandiose griots recounting the glories of the past, and its funky, soulful singers and string players pounding out the blues of the moment.

This striking album of sanza mbira songs was produced by Ocora, the record label of Radio France that has made so many incredible recordings over the past decades. The excellent technical sound quality puts these G’Baya musicians right in front of you, with their beautiful sanza playing, their low, sonorous singing, and their complex hand percussion. This is one of the most amazing albums of non-Zimbabwean mbira music I have ever heard.

Roots & Ancestors 1

A Journey To the Roots of Traditional Southern Africa

Notes: 6pp.

CD (464-C) $15.00 plus shipping available

”Volume 1 mainly features the southern tribes of South Africa, the first being the ‘Zulus’ in the East, with three artists representing various styles of traditional and modern maskanda. Busi Mhlongo, perhaps the most popular female performer, has given maskanda a new modern meaning, spreading the mainly ‘male’ form of music across the globe. Going west from tropical Durban in Kwa Zulu Natal we enter the soft, green hills of ‘Xhosa’ land where we mainly feature the work of Amampondo and their many friends and tribal members from rural Transkei and Langa (the oldest township in Capetown). Personally the most remarkable musical and spiritual journey took us to Africa’s oldest tribe – the San people (Bushmen) in Namibia on the border to Botswana where the sand dunes of the Kalahari begin to form. Our first visit with Pops Mohamed subsequently resulted in a number of rewarding projects presenting the San’s tradition to a mostly ill-informed Western public.” – Robert Trunz, MELT 2000
