Cosmas Magaya & Beauler Dyoko

Beauler Dyoko began playing mbira when instructed to do so by her father’s spirit after a long illness. Her connection with the ancestral spirits is deep; through dreams, they have passed on all of the songs she plays. Because of Ambuya Beauler’s powerful playing and singing, she is a well-respected musician, even though she is one of the few women mbira players in Zimbabwe. Currently she leads the group Mhuri yekwa Ambuya Beauler Dyoko & the Black Souls.

Cosmas Magaya has been playing mbira ever since he “borrowed” his cousin’s mbira as a young boy and started practicing. In addition to performing, Cosmas teaches mbira and shares Zimbabwean culture, especially during his trips to the United States. He is part of a team researching and preserving Zimbabwean traditional music and currently leads the mbira group Mhuri yekwa Magaya.

Afamba Apota means that any journey will have unexpected events. One fortunate event of Cosmas and Beauler’s millennium journey to America was the unexpected opportunity for them to make this recording together. “In Zimbabwe, we each have our own mbira groups. Though we have previously toured Europe and the U.S.A. and made recordings as part of larger groupings, we have never before performed or recorded together as a duo. As we are now traveling together in the U.S., we have been able to make this recording, a special treat for both of us. The spirit of the songs in this context was unique and very enjoyable for us.”
